Do most change out raw water pump anually?? I was told that it is recommended to change out the raw water pump every year. I just feel like it would seem like it wouldn't have to be changed so often as I don't drive it like a car nor do I run it in salt water. I just want to here what you guys think about this. It's a 2007 Larson bowrider I/O 5.0Gl Volvo Penta Sx drive with under 20 hours on my engine. It's going to be about 275 parts+labor. I do realize there are two water pumps, I was told it was the one on the crankshaft. So......please give me your intake on this.

Thanks fellows,

Re: Do most change out raw water pump anually??

In the past, I have always recommended every other year for Volvo's and never had a problem. Volvo is now recommending every year or 50 hours.
Sounds a little over the top to me, because the pumps are the same as earlier years.
If you had a new engine with fuel injection and the catalitic converter, I could understand want the best pump impeller possible. But with a carbed engine, run in fresh water, every other year should be fine.

Now, after saying that, I would recommend something like this if you want to test it out.
After a year, pull the old impeller out. Let it set for 15 minutes and take a picture of the curve in the vanes. Then run an impeller for 2 years and do the same test. You will probably see that the blades do not straighten out all the way on the 2 year old pump. Those pumps work by how well the recover their shape. If they don't they straighten out completely after 15 minutes, you have reduced effeciency in your pump.
Those pump vanes get mashed down pretty tight in one side of the pump. And if left that way for long periods of time, make them less effecient.

I typically change mine as part of my summer prep. Then I know that the Impeller is good for the season. I have the same drive on both my boats and they do lose there resilience after a while. Cheap insurance if you know how to change them yourself.

I run Mercruiser engines and change my impellers every other year and have never had a problem. My impellers have an easy life running in clean fresh water, no sand, rocks etc. so keep that in mind.

Do you guys change out the pump yourself? if so how diffucult is it. Is it a matter of takeing it off and replacing a gasket and putting it back on? or is there some sort of other process? Mine is out in an open spot on the crankshaft, very easy access.

I just feel like it would seem like it wouldn't have to be changed so often as I don't drive it like a car nor do I run it in salt water.

Owner/operators seem to come up with dozens of reasons to
delay/skip scheduled maintenance. Too expensive, equipment not used much, equipment downtime and the mechanic just wants to rob me.

When the maintenance schedule is followed, the chances of the equipment failing is reduced to the minimum.

Instead of "Run it til it breaks" mentality,
think Preventative Maintenance.

Preventative maintenance costs a bunch less than repairs.

By the way, you didn't mention which field your engineering degree is in?

yep, true, that is what the forum is for.
also you may find a oem service manual a real good place to find the facts on your machine. though i don't know where to get one for a new vp. perhaps your dealer can help you there...

not that it makes any difference since i have a mercruiser and know nothing of your vp. but i change my impeller yearly... a inspection is what is in the preventive maint. schedule for my rig. but since mine is not real easy to go look at. if i go to look at it, i'm gonna replace it. overheats because of impeller failure are avoidable for the most part i think.
