Couldn't really understand why a $40 tax on Amish buggies would make any difference. Isn't this just another attempt by the cold hearted Repubs to bash the people in black?

Do they really tear up the roads? I've never noticed this.

Dem people in black

Re: Do the amish really tear up the roads?

I dunno, they are using the roads but not paying for them with gasoline tax... so sure, they should pay for their use. We pay WAY more than $40 per year to use the roads when you consider that easily $.47 (does anyone know what the rate is today?) of each gallon of road fuel sold is just tax, mostly to pay for road maintenance and construction, so the politicians say.

Also, roads were designed to carry a specific load, the load of a vehicle with rubber tires. It is possible that the smaller footprint of a buggy places more pressure per square inch than a vehicle would, thereby inducing excessive wear on the pavement surface??? Heck I don't know?

Horseshoes and buggy wheels cause more wear than rubber vehicle tires? Hoofprints and wagon tracks in the asphalt? In that case - you should write your senators and suggest that automobile accidents causing scrapes or scratches on the highways (metal contacting asphalt) should be taxed because of the extra wear and tear on the road surface. That should make all things equal.

I just hope they use some of the money to pay a guy to clean up all the horse pucky left on the roads. Ain't no fun riding a motorcycle and coming up on a huge load of horse manure across the highway. Been there done that got the Tee shirt.
