Re: Do you guys use your safety lanyard?

Seldom; depends on conditions, if I am alone, and which boat. Most likely to use it in a 14' jon boat tiller steer. However, I have to confess that the one I am less likely to use it on is practically the same boat as in the video. so running in rough conditions like that I would.
One thing to keep in mind, especially in large vessels, is that you want to kill the motor even if you don't get thrown overboard but just thrown away from the helm. You could get pitched into the bow or stern and your boat is out of control.

Re: Do you guys use your safety lanyard?

i would if i had one. my old boat didn't come with one. of the few mods i've thought about doing. a kill switch is one of them. i've seen too many videos of folks being ejected from the helm. two dudes died this summer at my local watering hole. a bass boat hauling azz, two ejected, boat circled them @ wot twice before hitting and killing both on the third time back around... allegedly both regular boaters too. neither wearing a pfd either... :( , they were both alive and kickin after they hit the water too. that whole incident could have been prevented if the skipper would have had the kill lanyard on...

Yes. As much a part of my safety equipment as PFD's, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, etc.....

I have been thrown off a boat while alone one time years ago and the boat kept going. I quickly installed a lanyard after that incident.

My 14' flat bottom is not equiped with one. And if it were, I would most likely not use it.
My 21' bowrider has one. It is tucked up under the helm with my spare whistle and key on it. If I fall out of that boat, it had better be on its side.
On my waver runner, yes. No ifs ands or buts about it.
I cannot see the video, so I do not know what happened.

I see me getting beat up here.

My boat has one, but it's disconnected. I'll be connecting it this weekend.

I must admit that mine is jumped out. I have an enclosed helm and the chances of me being thrown out the boat while running is next to nil.

I am however very vulnerable when I'm on the back deck fishing on the troll. I?m constantly leaning over the side to net fish. Moving rods about and putting myself in compromised positions on a regular basis. Coupled with the fact that I fish alone quite a bit it makes things even worst.

I?ve been looking at installing a wireless system but it?s still couple rungs down the list yet.

yes and no, depends on the conditions i'm driving in and expected speed. Getting thrown clear out isn't the biggest issue, in ANY boat you can catch a bad wave and get tossed from the helm. one good whack to the head and you are now unconscious and aboard an unguided boat possibly at WOT.

Never... But it does work. If the situation dictates I have no problem clipping it on. It's been many years since I've been in a situation that I feel required it's use. Most boats I've owned have been over 20 feet.

Not on the pontoon due to slow speed, small chop and stable deck, but the 14' tinny with the 30 hp will have it as part of the rebuild. I can see getting jostled with that one.

No I usually don't, but should when I am alone. I do wear my PFD when alone.

Re: Do you guys use your safety lanyard?

I am never alone, and on a lake, meaning chance of a rogue wave big enough to cause an issue is very slim. Also on a 30' cruiser and I plane at 23 MPH. Hell, my WOT (which I never do) is 30.

So no, I don't. But I do actually take the time to get the PFD's out when I leave the slip.

Not since the first time out. little lake, little chance of "rogue" waves. Never say never, but damn slim chance.

Re: Do you guys use your safety lanyard?

I've got a separate lanyard attached permanently to each of my 2 teenagers PFD's, so they pretty much have to use it for their skiff.

They know that I have binoculars, and if I spot them out there not wearing their PFD, I'll take the boat key away for a week or so.

Of course, being a hypocrite, I usually don't use one on my boat, unless they're on the boat with me.

Don't have one, are they easy to install?

My boat is 21'6" long(over 23' with swim platform), is it common to have one on a boat this size?

If you feel the need, It's basically an open or closed switch. Lanyard in switch is closed, Lanyard out switch is open. You can always buy one and drill a hole in your console and hook your wires up, Like I said , If you feel the need. I have one and just leave the lanyard in it, Just never have clipped it on yet.
