Is it common to put in a On/Off switch for just 1battery or is it common practice to just disconnect it while not being used?

It doesn't matter if you have a switch, disconnect the cable, or leave it connected. If you have a habit of leaving stuff turned on then a battery switch or disconnecting the cable is probably in order. If the boat sits unused for weeks at a time and AC power is available, install an on-board smart charger. They can remain plugged in indefiinitely and will keep the battery in top condition. Otherwise a switch is certainly a better alternative than disconnecting the cable.

Also a saftey item. Will prevent a fire if something shorts. This happened to me. I would not operate a boat without a switch.
