Do you own a 9.9hp Mercury?

I'm trying to get some first hand advise on the performance characteristics of the lower hp 2 stroke Merc compared to the newer 4 stroke Mercs.

If you have owned both I sure would appreciate your opinion. My main question is how to they compare at WOT. Is there much difference in top end speed between the two? I understand that the 2 stroke is quicker at start but I can't find anything definite about WOT.

They will both get the same top end at wot. There is some difference in the hole shot but not enough to worry about.A 9.9 is going to produce just that 9.9hp no matter what motor you buy 2stroke or 4stroke as i said maybe some more hole shot that is about it.

Also the newer mercs, nissans and tohatsus up to 30hp they are the same motors. They are all made by tohatsu. The new smaller 4strokes have stronger gear ratios to make up for the weight so they are not to far apart.Like a 15 hp 2stroke like i have has a 2.00 gear ratio but the weight is only 73lbs and a merc 15hp 4stroke is at 115lbs but the gear ratio is 2.15.The technology in the 4strokes is catching up very quickly but i would not be suprised in the future if everything was direct injected like the optimax merc makes.

Thanks boater. That is what I thought as well. 9.9hp is just that regardless of engine makeup. As far as hole shot is concerned - I'm not that concerned with that since it is only a 9.9. My concern was that the 2 would be able to push the boat faster at wot than a 4. I believe the weight difference is only about 15-20 lbs as well which isn't a huge difference.

I was just having a hard time finding anyone with first-hand experience in both configurations.

Any others out there?

Have own both. Only difference was stating - the 4 stroke was a bit harder to get going. But when running no difference on my 1950 Tyee

So then once the boat is up and running (I don't like to say "Up on plane" because I don't know if a 9.9 will even get the boat on plane) then there is no difference in how fast the boat is being pushed? I assume where it becomes a bigger issue is with the larger motors that are used for pulling skiers and such where hole-shot is more important.

My dilemma is I can get a 2007 4-stroke for $400 more than a 1999 2-stroke and I'm not sure I will be satisfied with the 4-stroke performance from what I've been reading. But I believe in most cases the guys making those comments are running MUCH larger motors than a 9.9.

My boat is smaller than yours (polarkraft MV1571 DB) but can you tell me ROUGHLY how fast the motor pushed your boat.

We have alot of 10hp restricted lakes here in Illinois so I can't go any larger.

Re: Do you own a 9.9hp Mercury?

Your boat should do around 13 to 17mph maybe a hair bit more as that is a big boat your trying to push with a small engine. My 15hp 2stroke merc can push a 1448 alumacraft 27mph with 2 people it is a little powerhouse of a motor. You want to get a fell for what the motor you are looking at will do go to you tube and punch in a motor like a merc 9.9 4stroke or any other motor and there are endless videos of people recording their speeds and tons of boats showing how good they plane out.

Just go their and punch in any motor like a 9.9 or a 15 or 20 hp 4stroke and just keep doing that and you will find what ypour looking for as there is so many videos there on boat motors it will take you like a week to get through them all.good luck if you need more help let me know.
