Do you recognize this outdrive?

I have a 21' Grady White with a 3.8 v-6 I/O, I've been told that they were only available from 1981-1986 and that it should have an 800 outdrive on it, but the drive in the picture (this is not mine but looks just like it) does not look like any 800 that I've seen, the exhaust does not go through the prop, it exits the housing above the prop.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Eric

I didn't think the exhaust was through-hub on any stringer. I thought the only difference was 400= small gearcase for 4cylinders and 800= large gearcase for v6 and v8.

The drive Pictured, is referred to as an "electric shift, high profile OMC stringer mount drive".
It's not a 400 or 800 series (those came along about a decade later).

The "3.8" you have, Etkeeny, would be the Buick 225 cubic inch V6 used by OMC from about 1965 to 1972. 155HP. It's more of a 3.7, than a 3.8 actually.

The 1980's OMC 3.8 was a Chevrolet 229 cubic inch V6 170HP or 185HP unit- quite a different engine and it used a different drive (a low profile 800 series with through hub exhaust) and that's the one you've been told about...not the one you have, but they are often confused due to the similar displacement.

Lots of cool pics and info about the 1960's Buick V6 OMC here:

If you can determine the year of the hull (Maybe the Hull Serial #) the year of the outdrive is often one model year older.
