I know you ski behind a boat; trailer a boat, but where do you ride? In or On?

I use them almost interchangeably but if I thought about it I would go with "on".

Engines are inboard or outboard. People are onboard or overboard! :D

Re: Do you ride IN or On a boat?

After waterskiing, "get in the boat" (in/out).

According to the gospel of Apocalypse Now, "Never get off the boat" would imply you want to be On the boat (on/off).

I ride IN a car; ON a bike; ON a pontoon boat, but for our typical tin boats...????
On the chair in the boat? ARRRRGGGHHH!?!?!?!

Somewhere I saw that if it's enclosed, you'd be IN it. But a boat is enclosed and yet, not. Unless of course you're in a yacht...on a yacht. Ayyyye??

Oh no...the quote is:
Willard: [voice-over] "Never get out of the boat." Absolutely g88d+mn right! Unless you were goin' all the way... Kurtz got off the boat. He split from the whole f'n' program.

And so we have BOTH implications of in/out, on/off.

If it's time to go, as in the storm is coming and we have to go NOW, I tell my crew to get IN the boat! Once we're moving, we're ON the water...

The Lonely Island and T-Pain say "I'm On a Boat".

I'm currently ON the boat....IN the cockpit.....ON a deck chair....IN the sun......ON my computer....typing this. Now it's time to go IN the engine room......to work ON the fuel system.....IN the bilges....ON my engines....that are IN the boat ;)

Now I'M confused!

In, but I think if I had a 'toon, I'd ride "on".

it's a PROJECT boat. which means the answer is "neither, i just work on it, and occasionally sit in where the helm will be and make vroom noises when i've had a couple of beers"

Re: Do you ride IN or On a boat?

that is a good point, so back to the beginning, what kind of "BOAT" are we defining here

I'm thinking runabouts, like most on our board. Personally I have a SS, my Dad's got a Jup and a bud's got a family yacht (the Holiday).

I still think it sounds goofy, but I'm leaning towards IN as the majority of my body is IN the boat. That and falling out is more likely than falling off.....unless... I was boarding it at the time. sheesh ,this is maddening!!!!

I'm on my boat

But, I like to be in my boat when it's moving.

If I'm on it - I could be standing on the gunnel or the splashwell.

If your on board you are likely to fall overboard. :D
