Dodge Computer Codes

Does anyone here know how to get the check engine codes out of a 1999 Dodge Durango with a 318 in it? The wife just called and said her check engine light came on and stayed on. She's good about checking gauges and knowing what good and bad readings on the gauges are. She said the big 3 were good. The big 3 being oil pressure, engine temp and voltage. <br /><br />Any wisdom on this, guys???

Unfortunately, 1998 and 1999 Dakotas and Durangos are the ONLY years that CANNOT check their own trouble codes. The ONLY way for you to retrieve the codes is with a scantool or DRB. But that doesn't mean you don't have to BUY one. You can get your computer scanned for free at any Autozone store<br /><br /> http://www.obdii.com/codes.html

I just remembered that a Buddy of mine has a scan tool. I called him and he said to come pick it up ! ! WHAT LUCK !

EF, my wifes Intrepid showed codes awhile back. Turned out that it sensed that the battery cables were corroded. How is your cables? Maybe a quick and cheap fix. Just a thought.....SS

Also, if the gas cap is loose the light will come on in many of the Mopar vehicles.

I haven't checked anything on the truck yet. She just called this morning and said that the light was on. I'm going to pick the code reader up with afternoon and check everything out. I too hope its nothing major. I'm bout ready to get rid of the thing anyway.

I was told by a dodge dealer, if the light comes on and stays on....the car can be driven without problems, if the light however blinks its time to park it before serious damage occurs.<br /><br />I have a 2002 Durango, not sure if the same rules apply for a 99.

I used my friends code reader lastnight and it showed a P0720 which is according to the list is "Low Output Speed Sensor RPM, 15 mph."<br /><br />ANybody got any ideas on this one?? I do know that the truck locks the doors for you at or around 15 to 20 mph and one of the doors in the back locker hollers like a rooster crowing when the doors lock. Yall think that might have something to do with it?

I have an 03 Durango and I couldn't stand the doors locking every time I drove. You can shut that feature off very easily. I just forgot how. If you want I'll find it again and let you know how. It seems I just turned the key on and off while doing something else......good luck<br /><br />Dave

Found it in case your'e interested,<br /><br />The owner's manual has the following method to turn off the autolock feature.<br /><br />1. close all doors<br /><br />2. put key in ignition and then turn the key between the OFF and ON positions for a total of 4 times ending in the OFF position. (do not start engine).<br /><br />3. press the driver's side power door lock button to lock the doors.<br /><br />4. you will hear a single chime when the programming is completed.

P0720 (M) Low Output Spd Sensor RPM Above 15 mph <br /><br />You're way off base on the door locks.<br />This will be an A/T code. <br />Output shaft speed is less than 60 rpm with vehicle speed above 15 mph (4-speed auto. trans. only).<br />A slipping transmission (free-wheeling)or a malfunction with a speed sensor are possible causes.

More accurately, If the Check Engine/Service Engine Soon light flashes, it indicates a catalyst damaging misfire. You can try letting up on the gas and see if the light stops flashing. If the light comes on and stays on, you may still cause serious damage. The best thing to do when the light rears it's ugly glow is to reduce speed, stop as soon as safely possible, and have your vehicle serviced.<br /><br />Good Luck<br />David L. Chryslers are famous for transmission shaft speed sensors going bad. If you can use the code reader for reading the datastream, check the freeze frame data. Specifically check if it shows output speed. I bet it will register 0. If the condition is present, you can view current data and watch the output speed sensor and see what it's RPM is. IF you can view the data and the output shaft speed sensor reads 0 while you are moving, replace the sensor.

I had the same code on my 1999 Dakota. This speed sensor is located in the overdrive housing of the transmission. I removed it and found it covered with metal shavings (not good). I put in a new sensor and it was coated and throwing codes within the week. This was coupled with poor shifting from the tranny. When the transmission finally failed, I pulled it out and put in a 5 speed manual, problem solved. I have heard the OD units in these trannies tend to fail first, so you probably want to get it into a shop to check it out, hopefully it won't need a full rebuild. If it does, consider beefing it up with a shift kit, upgraded cooling, and other goodies so this doesnt happen again (especially if you tow with it). <br /><br />Hopefully just the sensor is bad, but getting it checked out is the first step.
