Does Antifouling Bottom Paint affect boat speed.

Antifouling Bottom Paint,especially thick copper base has a very rough finish,my boat is slower then I expect,just wonder if paint will affect my speed.

yes it will. depending on the hull, and how rough the paint is, you can loose between 5 and 8% easy. my boat lost about 3mph.

Yes, it can. However, the loss of speed from a fouled bottom is WAY more!

Rough is good to a point because it traps air which reduces the friction between the hull and the water. Less friction equals greater speed. Having said that, you can have too much of a good thing. How many old coats of paint do you have on your hull?

I used Micron Extra with no noticeable change in performance.

the effect should be fairly small.

Yes, but so does everything else

when I used to paint sail boat bottoms we always ran the brush strokes fore to aft, not beam to beam.

WW II 80' PT boats [ 40 tons ] put 5 steps across the bottom. Speed went from 40 knots to 50 knots.

WW II 80' PT boats [ 40 tons ] put 5 steps across the bottom. Speed went from 40 knots to 50 knots.

apples and oranges... Steps are NOT the same as roughness, huge massive difference in how they do their job. Flip those steps around and see how they work, since they should be the same. 'Roughness' isn't directional.

I survived the operation !!

Roughness is directional in all moving objects.

PT boat hull ...........Porcupine quills ......animal furs........tree leaves..........grasses & weeds...............human hair..............most meteors entering the atmosphere. Any more things ?

A particular kind of rough surface has been shown to reduce water friction. That is why competitive swimmwes wore those head to toe suits. They were based on the surface of sharkskin. Seems to me that have been outlawed in competitive swimming.

Some antifouling paint companies are working a a different kind of rough surface that is designed to be antifouling, but use much less biocide. If I remember correctly, the surface was scale-like, with overlapping paint surfaces.

I just remembered about the coating Off Shore race boats use. VERY DANGEROUS. Too slick.

If I wanted to use it, I would have to sign a FULLY LEGAL release that I COULD NOT SUE for any damage if my boat slipped off ANYTHING while being moved in the marina. I WILL BE SUED for any damages my boat causes.

Salmon DO RELEASE a super slick slime just before they start to leap over any waterfalls in their way.

The money we pee away on useless crap like fish slime.........But no help for people losing jobs due to computers & robots......Which is more important?
