Ayuh,... At best, I'll leave the old 1 in place,...
If it gets in the way pullin' the bearin' out, it gets the float test,...

It only holds back a tiny bit of grease, if ya over grease the bearin' anyways,...
A nearly useless part,...

Ok. I doesn't get wrecked when trying to take the old bearing out. And is there nothing to keep the grease from comming out the front of the bearing? I guess i'll find out when I attempt it for myself in a few weeks. Thanks

If the gimbal bearing is the newer designed perma lube gimbal bearing (no grease added/needed) then the grease seal is no longer needed but if it's an older greasable bearing then the grease seal should be considered to be left in place or replaced if removed to help keep the inside of the boat cleaner from grease splatter.

I wasn't sure on mine either. After doing some reading I decided to just leave the old one alone. It is more to keep the grease from making a mess than anything. They don't wear out.

When you go to put the new bearing in (and I hope you opt for the sealed/non greaseable type), drop it in the deep freeze for a couple of hours. The bearing housing contracts enough with the cold to make it much easier to knock in....

That's great advice. We use dry ice to shrink shafts and bearings all the time here at the old steel mill.

Don't overdo it. The bearing is steel but the carrier is aluminium. Cool it too far and you risk breaking something.

It will also keep water coming in via deck like sea spray from running a drip line and entering into bearing. I had a "wet" deck SR whose deck drains couldn't always keep up, especially backing down a fish. If you replace gimbal bearing, I highly recommend replacing inner seal. Just my 2 cents. Best idea to keep bellows bone dry of water.
