Does anyone have a schematic of the water path?

1997 Yamaha 200 Saltwater II

I do not understand how the flush kit under the cowling flows through the engine. Do thermostats come into play? Why would the kit only do a parcial flush?

I do not have the owner's manual. The 1998 Owners Manual avaliable on-line is not clear (page 4-9).

Some folks say use muffs.

Some say the kit only flushes the head.

When I use my kit I have water running out the bottom from all the holes/intakes as well as the **** indicator ("like a race horse").

My boat is in the water all the time, and I flush using the fixed system with Salt A Way every time I return.

Here is a link to a Yamaha site with exploded parts diagrams:
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/parts/home.aspx

I have a 95 175 and its always been my understanding that its not to be run while connected only to the flush hose/adapter or you risk frying the pump impeller. Makes sense as the hose adapter is located in the powerhead well above the output of the impeller. So water flow needed for cooling the impeller would be working against the output pressure of the pump itself.

I use the muffs

Osprey is correct. The flusher and muffs serve two totally separate functions. The flusher, as its name implies, fluses the power head by running fresh water through it. It is not intended to be used with the engine running. It is beneficial to use that method if your boat is used in salt water and is not pulled out after use. Outboards must never be run without the leg being in the water, or if out of the water, muffs must be used to 1) provide cooling water and 2) lubricate the impeller. Water from the telltale while on muffs is not proof the pump is working since water is being forced through the system. As Osprey says, if you use only the flusher, the rubber water pump impeller is not being lubricated and will fry in very short order.

Who said anything about running the engine?

The flusher..."the power head by running fresh water through it"

Everyone keeps stating powerhead, but my flush kit attachment has water running out of the bottom leg.

Does the flush kit (as called in the Yamaha Parts list) flush the entire water system?

PS Thanks for the link... I take it this tube goes through the Lower Casing 6E5-44366-00-00 DAMPER, WATER SEAL 2 6E5-44361-20-00 TUBE, WATER to 6E5-44361-00-00 TUBE then to the Head?
the 6H1-11372-00-00 NIPPLE, HOSE FLUSHING KIT connects where and comes out where?

Thanks!

Kavika

I flushed my 2004 40 4-stroke today using a Salt-Away dispenser attached to the hose fitting that sticks out just below the cowling. The soapy water came out every where. Strong through the pisser and out of all the other holes including through the prop. To me this must be flushing the whole system.

The water pressure would hardly spin the impeller but to me it must be getting past the impeller.

I also am now wondering if it gets past the thermostat.

I don't have my owners manual to hand but I am pretty sure it doesn't specify flushing both ways to do the job properly. It's either/or I think. When I'm at the boat next I'll look it up.

Can any of the techs shed any light on this?

with the t-stats closed no water fows past them. on the 2 stroke V^ you can flush all you wish with the engine mouted garden hose adapter and water wont flow through the heads. if the hose pressure is high enough it may open the pressure valve and dump the excess down the exhaust.
the garden hose adapter on the engine is not desined for flushing with the engine running. only engine off. I would rather see it flushed running but not running is better than not flushing at all. if the motor uses a non-pressure releif type t-stat water stops at the t-stat until the block is warm enough to open the t-stat.
when usuing the engine garden hose adapter water is introduced upstream of the impeller thus taking it out of the picture.

I take it then that the water flows through the head ok on the F40 on the garden hose? If so, does it still not make it past the thermostat?

Should I be using both flush techniques on my F40 to do it properly?

no sense in using both
use one if ya cant get the muffs on and the muffs when ya can.
