I know it can be done cheap using 2x4s or 2x6s and some carpet. Any ideas?

If that's your boat in the pic I would look at maybe some of the pipe ones. Bent tubing ubolted to the frame then wrap it with pipe foam. Thicker PVC pipe might work too.

Ayuh,... I went with taller pipes towards the aft,..
The launches I use get Deep, Quick...
The sideboard style just Disappear...

1?" pvc condiut, sch80, with a 90? sweep cut in ? at the top works the Best for me.....

What Bondo suggested. That sounds pretty economical and should work fine for a light boat like yours.

I agree I would use some type of pipe set up on a boat like yours it would make loading and unloading a breeze.

I added galvanized pipe guides with PVC covers. Bought all the material at HD and used epoxy on the pipe threads to keep 'em from moving. Bought the cheapo lights at Harbor Freight because they don't get wet anymore. Less then $60.
BTW, I've since moved the license plate down to the trailer frame and added a waterproof white LED light.

Here is what I did. I ran another set of lights that stick out of the water to help when trailering at night. I load and unload myself and it works perfect every time. Cost me less than 15 bucks in parts at Home depot...

Re: Does anyone have any ideas on making my own guide ons?

Alpheus thanks for posting this! I went to Lowes and even with paint, reflectors, and glue I was under $40 for the parts. I have a 20' Crownline 202 with an Eagle trailer. We will be trailering the boat on the Interstate 9+ hours this summer. Does the PVC seem sturdy enough on the highway? Or would you recommend a quick-connect to put on at the ramp? Also, How should I proceed with the screws into the trailer? Is there a high risk of nicking a tail light wire? Thanks in advance for your reply!

I think you might want guides that are more substantial than Alpheus's.
While they would let you know where the trailer is, I do not see them surviving a small impact from the boat.

Bear in mind when high-mounting those taillights that there are Federal requirements for maximum (and minimum) heights:
http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/standards/conspicuity/trlrpstr.html

Tail and stop bulbs may be as high as 6' (or 72") off the ground, and blinkers may be even higher (83"), but your rear reflex reflectors and rear side markers and reflectors can be no higher than 5' (or 60") off the ground.

Your state may have additional rules.

I think that really helps answer my question, thanks! I'm going to install the lower part and put uprights in before loading. Jeeperman I'm not sure it would survive too much from the boat, but if it keeps breaking, I can stop using and not be out too much $$$. I can always pay the money for a more substantial setup complete with led lights.
