Does anyone have one of these 1954 14' Stamas Plywood Boat

My dad, uncle, and I restored our old 14' Stamas plywood boat which was sitting up on Drummond Island in Michigan for nearly 15 years. My grandpa bought this boat brand new and has been the only owner since what we believe was 1954. This boat is restored to it's original state, color and all.

We bought a 20 horse Mercury for the boat, but unfortunately that motor was a dud and we are looking for a new set up. It's tough finding old motors because this boat has controls and most of what we come across are tillers.

Let us know if you are familiar or know anything about this boat.

I live in Tarpon Springs, FL where Stamas Yachts was started. I happened to go by the old factory on the Anclote River on Sunday.
They finally started storing boats in the empty lot. They built some beautiful boats there and only stopped a few years ago. I think they have a facility in St Pete now...

What make of engine control box do you have ?............Why not go with a Johnson / Evinrude ? Lots more motors controls & parts.

Really nice boat you have there, finding a vintage outboard shouldn't be an issue, but I would aim but a 35 or more would push that boat well?

I am not sure of the original motor, but remembering back to the Island days, it had an 18 horse Evinrude on it. We bought a Merc 200 that was converted from a tiller to control box. There was a part in there that broke, so we made it work by linking directly to the throttle. It worked fine, but the motor didnt run right.

Plywood boats ARE STRONG for their weight. They are quiet. I am guessing there is NO hp limit plate ?

Older boats should have a motor selected by putting 2 200# guys in the seats. Size 24 battery where it goes. At least 2 FULL gas tanks. Anchor, 10 to 20 pounder.

Then start putting motors on the transom.........You may be suprised by how much motor is needed to get a balanced look..........Hopefully that weight agrees with hp needed. We use that method when updating any older boat.

Our saying is. " If it looks right. It is probably right ".

No one likes a too high or too low bow or stern.
