I have my starcraft up for sale and a guy responded saying its a 1968 and not a 1986 ? My oregon title says 21' 1986.
I have a hull identification tag on the transom and the number stamped in an alum plate inside the boat (this plate says 21' chieftain, tag is partial missing because they ran the steering cable right thru the plate (what where they thinking)
If anyone has a way to confirm based on the identification number on the hull and on the inside tag that states the model of boat and capacity I would be interested in confirming if this boat is a 1986 or 1968. Thanks.
The new boat is getting close to being finished, windows are coming tomorrow.

There were no HIN's in 1968. Go with what your title says

Does the title have a HIN that matches. The first 3 letters of the HIN should be STR and the last two should be 86. If the HIN begins ORZ, it is a state issued HIN and the rest can't be used for ID'ing the boat.

So 99.99% likely to be pre-72.

Does the guy that told you its a 68 want to buy it?

As long as the paperwork is in order w the Oregon issued, matching HIN, there is no price difference, IMO, between 2 identical boats (hulls and etc) in identical condition, no matter that 1 is 20yrs older then the other.

Good luck w the sale of 1 and completion of the other.

Your HIN can't be used except for legal ID. The 86 end numbers are the year the new HIN was issued.

I have a GAZ HIN ending in 11 because it was issued in 2011. The first rego card said year built was 1966, the last one says year built is 2011 - Rule change? I do have my ID plate from Starcraft to prove it is a 1966. Your plate is messed up, it sounds like.

Can your read the serial number on the SC plate? Back then, the first 2 numbers may be the year of manufacture, mine begins 66.

As for the year, at least here in MN, the info on the reg is only as good as what somebody gives them, and they have no problem changing it on request, ie; like computers, garbage in - garbage out.

So on an old boat, pre HIN, the best you can do is get your S/N and keep an eye out for comparables.

In my case, I can't be 100% sure the S/N plate is original, as they didn't record it when the boat was 1st registered.

Dan

ps, what is you S/N? I've been recording samples in the 69-73 range, also, it should be easy to tell the difference between a 60's boat and a 80's boat, very different paint and trim, check the catalogs.
