I am currently in the process of evalutating a software for use at my work. As far as I know this one is free but I haven't looked into it too much as this project just got started yesterday(4/4/06). It might be what you're looking for.

PHP Nuke

The web IT people seem to feel it offers us the best options at little to no cost. Just remember that you will have to dedicate a good deal of time moderating the site as it starts to develop. Hence the fact that our will be a private forum for employess only. Good luck and I hope it helps.

There are a lot of forums out there for free. One major consideration is whether your servers is running the apps needed for the forum to function.

I personally like XMB forums because of the excellant forum based support. (And it's FREE) Also, XMB is very customizable to match your site. There's quite a few hacks available if more than "basic" features are needed. I can't remember the exact release, but XMB requires PHP and MySQL running on your server. If you don't mind ads on your site, there are free boards like RunBoard, that sit on their own server, you just link from your site to the board on another server.

Also, XMB is pretty simple to install and maintain. Shell access isn't required. You simply upload the forum software to your site via FTP, and run the Install.php file.

Here's a link to my forum, check it out and see what XMB feels like. Green River Lake Ky.com Forum

My site has only been up for about 2 months, so there's not much going on yet. As each day passes, and summer gets closer, I'm slowly getting more traffic. Maybe by Memorial Day Weekend, there will be some members to my board. Also, overlook the general design of the site, as I am no designer. I'm in the process of negotiating with my Bro-in-Law (who is a graphic designer) on redesigning my site.
