With the internet being our new phone book nowadays giving us the quick ability to learn about most good or bad business practices, Say if two companies offered the exact same service at the exact same prices, would you in general be more inclined to use the company that was accredited with the Better Business Bureau rather than the company that is not accredited?

Trying to decide if the fees BBB charges are worth it.

To all forum lurkers, Please don't be shy, cast your vote before leaving, your name will not appear on the poll, Thanks.

Well your poll, is pretty tightly worded, but I can say, that BBB is really one of the last things I look at these days...but I do look every once in a while if my research does not provide the information I am looking for.

All it takes to join the BBB is a few dollars. Sorry I would not pay any attention to it any more

I work for myself these days and I do not belong to the BBB. I do not advertise...ALL of my jobs that I get are from word of mouth. In my humble opinion the BBB is somewhat outdated.

Oops, I didn't mean to make it such a strict question of yes or no, I can't seem to be able to change it now. Thanks for pointing this out though.

Should have been more like,
No, i wouldn't necessarily need to choose the company that was accredited with the Better Business Bureau.

I'd trust something like Angie's List before the Better Bribery Bureau.

What's the Better Business Bureau ?

Don't trust Angie either. 98.72% of households do not belong to Angies.
Only very large companies in very densely populated urban areas will ever come close to getting a statistically significant number of reviews for any one business, to make it a valid resource on which to base purchasing decisions.

I'll check both Angie's and BBB for something major. A good reference won't get anybody the job, but a bad one may cost them one, depending on what the reviewer has to say. (Idle b_tching is disregarded.)

I assume competence and a degree of trustworthiness unless someone describes a horror story in which either is lacking.

(Of course, it would be almost impossible to buy a new car if one stuck to this formula without exception.)

Re: Does being accredited with Better Business Bureau mean anything to you anymore?

I see some businesses that are 'accredited' but still have a fair amount of complaint volume . . .

So, it is not necessarily the stamp of approval that one might think. It seems that the accreditation is more like a registration so that there is a standing relationship.

Perhaps what is more important is the rating itself and the volume and nature of the complaint history.

There are also plenty of other review and rating sources to get a broader picture of a company's performance.

My tendancy would be to go with the company that has the stronger rating and review history even if the price were higher.

Or should have been;

No, I would not go with the company that was NOT accredited with the Better Business Bureau!

The current poll asks if you ... Would NOT GO with the company that WAS accredited...

The poll does not make sense. Options:

A) I would go with BBB.
B) I would not go with someone not BBB.

It asks the same question twice.

Right, Fun Time said what it should be in post #5.

Or it should be "No, being accredited by the BBB would have no influence on my decision."

Re: Does being accredited with Better Business Bureau mean anything to you anymore?

I have known several &*(^% companies that were accredited. They were scum and crooks. When you submit a claim, all they have to do is reply and they get a good rating. Naturally, they say its your fault and they are good.

Really, its a 80/20 proposition. There ARE a lot of accredited companies that are good.

OTOH, if they are NOT members I would be more worried. In my experience the odds are more like 20/80 and that's why I would go the accredited route.

Fee based certification is meaningless to me.
