Does cooling water only exit the pisser?

I'm fairly new to outboards and I'm curious if all cooling water exits through the the pisser or if some comes out the exhaust. I ask because all my old jetskis had pisser outlets but also directed water into the exhaust manifold for cooling.

Same thing on O/Bs. Tell-tell is just an indicator of water flowing through the motor. Most leaves through the exhaust.

Thanks. One more thing that still confuses be though. I was out on the Kenai river and I grounded the lower unit real good in the silt. About 10 minutes later my buzzer went off and when I looked back no water coming out. I cleaned the grit out of the outlet and problem solved. This was an 07 yamaha 50hp 4-stroke. Does this make any sense?

Mud could get in the intake and eventually get to the tell-tell outlet. Might be a good idea to run it on ears and give it a good flush.

I'm just curious why it overheated when seemingly only the pisser was plugged. I detached the hose, ran the motor until the bits of grit came out and no problems for the rest of the day.

When I got home I hooked the hose up the flush port and let it run for about 30 minutes with the intake vents removed.

Telltale is only an indicator that water is flowing in the cooling system. The fact that the overheat alarm went off indicates that the waterflow within the cooling system was also obstructed (not just the telltale) resulting in the engine overheating. The telltale being plugged was aslo an indicator that a lot of crud got injested into the cooling system.

I guess I was lucky it cleared itself out. I was 15 miles downriver from the launch, besides that the fishing was too good to quit.

Have they changed the Kenai HP rules? I thought they had to be lesser HP or be certified detuned.

It's up to 50hp now. Boats were having trouble getting on plane so the 35hp limit was doing more harm than good.
