I'm new to older outboards, (old car guy) and was wondering, does a 76 Merc 850 have a charging circuit? After looking at all the wiring I really don't see anything that looks familiar other than coils and plug wires. Thanks

Yes, It is called A stator it is under your flywheel! should have 2 yellow wires from it going to your rectifier. Tim

Thanks for your help. I'm familiar with alternators but not with stators. Didn't even know what they look like, so I wasn't sure if that particular motor ran off a battery or would recharge. Thanks again

Dave, If you trace the two yellow stator wires from the flywheel, down the starboard side of the block they will connect to the full wave rectifier. Run the motor and put a volt meter on the battery. When you rev the motor, the voltage should rise a bit. If not, you will need to check the rectifier for proper operation.
