i have a 2001 4.3 gl volvo penta that sometimes sets off the low oil pressure alarm for a brief moment when i'm running around 3000 rpms and back off to an idle. just changed oil (volvo penta sythetic 30w) and filter. my question is my engine has a bracket with the oil filter up near the top front of engine and the supply and return hoses run from there to the bottom of the engine where normally the screw on oil filter would be. does this set up have any effects on the oil pressure from having to pump oil the extra distance to reach the filter and then return?

Nope, not the filters fault. The switch is still on the block.
Are you sure it's the low pressure causing the alarm, or maybe the temp going up is causing the alarm.

actually i assumed it was the oil pressure alarm because of the oil pressure gauge goes down when the rpms drop to idle. my temp gauge reads around 120 . the oil pressure gage needle moves alot with the rpms.

Check it with a mechanical type test gage to see if its an actual pressure problem or just a sender or gage issue.

well, it was surely the oil pressure alarm going off. i removed the relocated oil filter system, hoses and all entirely and went back to screwing the oil filter on the block. i haven't had an oil pressure alarm since. well worth the added hassle at oil change time to have some extra pressure.

Just out of curiosity, were you using VP filters or an aftermarket?

Don, the oil filter that was on the relocation kit was an aftermarket supertec st5. the relocation kit was vp i think because the housing was stamped with #3854589. the filter i'm using now on the block is fram ph3387a.

Thats a highly debated topic, just like oil. I have seen some disassembled oil filters compared side by side. No vehicle in my fleet will ever be outfitted w a FRAM again, if I can help it. The brand I run now is WIX. Oriellies Auto parts had a disassembled FRAM next to a WIX,,,No comparison in quality.. Do a few searches, you will get a lot of thoughts to help you decide what you wanna run on your engines....
