I bought a 1984 150 Hp Mercury XR2 in 1999 used. I was told it had high performance parts on it but i didn't really believe the guy. it is on a skeeter starfire 175 and it ran ,according to GPS, 71 MPH i recently had to replace the switch boxes and now it runs good but it only moves about 58 mph does the brand and type of switch boxes make that big of difference in performance.

NO. Something's wrong. The race guys run stock switchboxes and the high perf stuff interchangeably to 10,000 rpm. They say there isn't much difference.

Disconnect all the "advance" modules, and perform a link n sync on it except set the WOT timing to 23 degrees (probably 19 in the book, difference made up by the "advance" module.) Idle and throttle pickup would be the same as stock.

hope it helps

DVA test the stator high speed windings, if voltage is beginning to reduce that will act as an RPM limiter, as the windings continue to degrade WOT RPM will continue to fall off until it simply will not run up much past an idle.

Stators COST, PROVE any problem with the DVA Meter before spending your money on NON-returnable, NON-refundable ignition parts.
