My Uncle is looking at a 2003 25HP Johnson for his 14' Lund. He found one in the local paper and the seller was willing to take it to a local dealer to have it checked out. As soon as the tech removed the engine cover he said the motor had been taken apart. The tech said the sealant used when the head was put back on wasn't a factory type sealant.

Anyways,my Uncle calls the dealer that the motor was originally purchased from and they said they always pull the head on the 10 hour service. They said they like to see if there are any signs of overheating.

The tech has given the motor a clean bill of health. He said the motor starts easily, runs great, and meets all the factory specs for compression, ect.

My Uncle isn't sure what he wants to do. The motor is in great shape, but he's leary of a motor thats been taken apart. What would you do?

If the tech says its a good engine, and I liked it, Id buy it. A head gasket aint nothin. Id find out how long it has been between water pump impellers though.

Hummm! A dealer that ALWAYS pulls the cylinder head at the 10 hour inspection????? They must not be very busy to do that OR they have very gullible customers to pay for that service!! Perhaps they got the "killer" deal on a truckload of head gaskets and need to get rid of 'em??

I thought it was odd that a dealer would pull a head for no obvious reason.

My Uncle talked to the seller again, and told him of the head being off at one time. The seller wasn't even aware that the dealer had pulled the head. He said the 10 hour service was a freebie that the dealer throws in as part of a sale.

The seller said the 10 hour service was supposed to be gear oil change,a plug change.and a short inspection.

I guess a short inspection includes pulling the head to check for overheating. :D

Pulling the head on that is not a big deal, but I don't think it's part of the 10 hour service. Find out if the seller has a book, it should list what that service should be. Maybe when replacing the plug they had a problem, the old tighten it up 'till it strips, then back off a turn ! But if everything's good no reason not to buy it. IMHO, Joe
