Does this setup need a transom saver? 40hp on Lund

I'll trailer pretty far distances. I have a manual tilt tiller 40hp Yamaha on a 16' Lund SSV. Motor weighs about 190.

Do you think I need a transom saver on this rig? Dealer said 2X4 and tie-down strap should do it (though I don't know how the 2X4 stays in there unless I don't use the tilt lock and let the motor rest on it, but that seems risky as well).

I really liked my transom saver for how it not only kept the motor from bouncing but from turning side to side as well. Plus it was probably even faster than strapping the thing down. If that was my rig, I'd use one. Even the simplest model of one should work great for you.

That sounds like a sweet rig canuck. Some time back you were trying to decide whether to get an inflatable as I recall. I think you made a great choice. If that were my boat I'd probably use a transom saver. They're not expensive, and 190 pounds bouncing up and down on your transom every time you encounter a bump doesn't sound like a good thing. I vote transom saver.

Walmart carries a "transom saver" type device for about $25, that and a good bungee cord and you're ready to roll. We're pulling my boat 500 miles to Florida next week and you better know I've got my motor locked down with one of these devices! No need to have your motor bouncing and flopping around back there. Thanks. Yes, I decided on the Lund over the inflatable as I didn't want to spend weekends fixing pinhole leaks. I haven't even had it on the water yet.

My other thought was the classic 2x4 and strap, but not sure if the engine weight will keep the 2x4 from falling out.

if you have the ground clearance to lock the motor down, I would skip the transom saver, as it is unnecessary. If you do not have sufficient ground clearance, the transom saver is one way to go. Make sure you bungee it down into the transom saver, or the motor can bounce up and the device can be lost.

if you had PTT, the transom saver would be unnecessary

I had 16 ft Lund Mr. Pike with a Johnson 50 hp. with power lift. I used a transom saver on that rig. Heck, I used a transom saver on a 25 hp as I put a lot of miles on going up north and back. Call it stupid, un-necessary or what ever. I call it really cheap insurance, a sure fire way to clear any driveway with your lower unit.
How many times have you been driving down the highway and you see the dude pulling the boat and the outboard is bouncing all over the place. . . . poor transom.

My dad broke the transom on his new 1997 Alumacraft classic 16' with a 25 hp on the back. Of course the rough washboard gravel roads had a hand in it.

After we fixed the transom, and wrapped a stainless steel skin over it, I bought him a new trailer (as it also broke 3 times in 3 years) and I added a transom saver.
