Does this sound like it's gonna cost me?

Having trouble shifting motor into reverse (refuses to budge) but not forward. Guy at the shop started mentioning the slight possibility of the lower unit being in a condition needing replacement. He's, of course, going to call me with an estimate for repair before any is done but I was curious if anyone can give me some advice on handling the situation. Motor: '69 Merc200 20hp. I know LUs are not cheap and I wonder if it may cost more than it's worth.

Did this happen instantly or has it been coming on for some time? Tiller steer I assume? I doubt lower unit replacement is necessary, but some lower unit work may be. In the latter case, labor is extensive so cost is high. In the replacement scenario, you are right, lower units are expensive. However, It may be as simple as the shift linkage needing some adjustment or lubrication at the top rather than inside the leg. I would want a fairly detailed description of "why" replacement is necessary if that's the diagnosis. Because it's broke -- is not an acceptable answer. I suggest you find a service manual for virtually any outboard and look at how a lower unit works so you better understand what he tells you.

If you remove the lower unit, you will find a plastic cam around the shift shaft. This cam lifts a rod that locks the motor down in reverse to keep it from kicking up. The cam gets worn and it keeps the shift from going into reverse because the lock rod won't move smoothly up the ramp of the cam. Common problem. biggest problem will be finding a new cam. If you remove the cam, everything will work except the motor will not lock down in reverse.
