I have a 50HP Mariner 4 stroke powering a Scout Dorado 155. The boat has a dry weight of 650 lbs. and the hull is a tri-V hull (I think that's what they call them).

With one adult and no gear, I am getting a top speed of 25mph at an RPM of around 5000.

Does this sound right? Seems slow.

you might want to give it a compression test and go from there,or put your question in the engine forums!

Bet your speedo is way off. Try GPS.

Seems slow to me ,too. I suspect something is wrong with speedometer. You should be turning more RPM than this, too. Post on the Mariner forum and you'll get more knowledgable answers about this particular motor.

Verified my speed with a GPS. Max speed was 30.9 mph. Does this sound right? RPMs were 6000. Just seems darned slow.

I would go up on the pitch of the prop and get your RPM's down to 5500 or so and see if the speed increases. 6000 is a bit much for that motor. What pitch are you running now?

Rick has good advice.

How is your motor trimmed? Down too low and it will slow you up also.

Personally 30MPH doesn't seem bad at all for a tri-hull with 50 HP. Much faster and it will beat you to death if there is any chop anyway.

Did Mariner really make a four stroke? Never heard of that before. (lots of boating things I haven't heard yet)
