Doesn't always want to go into neutral.

I have a 1999 Bayliner Capri 2050, 5.0, Alpha 1 gen. 2. Mercruiser stearn drive. It seems to shift fully into forward and reverse with no problem. My problem is when approaching a dock or when putting it on the trailer, it's hard to "find neutral". I have to pull it past neutral a little bit and then I can feel it disengage. It's the same way going from reverse to neutral. Sometimes, when I think it's in neutral, it's still in gear and that's dangerous! What do you think could cause this? Thanks Scott

Sounds like your shift cutout switch isn't working. Depress the switch arm or plunger while the engine is idling. It should kill. If it kills, the switch needs to be adjusted. If it doesn't kill, the switch needs to be replaced.
