I was reading some old posts where people were adding a tale tail to their motor by removing a screw on the motor. My motor already sprays water out of some holes on the back of it. Is this the same thing or should I add a tale tail so I know that my water pump is working?

I?m not familiar with your motor but I know you can add a tale-tale hole on a Johnson the same way. The holes I think your referring to is part of your exhaust, some water will come from them. I would add a tale-tale hole to be safe. I did it to my Johnson it's not bad at all to do that way a know water is flowing though my heads.

The exhaust relief holes on the back of the mid section are hard to monitor while driving.

A telltale aimed out the side is easier to see.

A telltale and a water pressure gauge is best. Over time the water pressure will slowly fall, and the gauge will tell you.
It will also indicate if there is an immediate catastrophic failure, like the water intakes getting blocked.
