doesnt start, just clicks

ok, im kinda new to the boating world...i just boought an older model chapparral its a 1987 chapparal 187 , it has a 140 hp mercruiser 4 cyc...
went to get it ready today to go on the lake and when i had the muffs hooked up...it wouldnt turn over, just clicks....so i changed out the slave solinoid and it still does the same thing....?....anyone had the same prob?...is it the starter?

Did you check the voltage in the battery? Clean all connections including the battery terminals. Check the water in the battery. If it still clicks tap the side of the starter with a hammer lightly see if it will turn over.

Did you check the battery cable connections at the battery, starter and your grounds?...I've experienced same before and gave the starter a couple of light taps with a hammer....stick around here there is a great wealth of knowledge and good advise. Welcome to iboats.

well, i jumped the wires on the starter and it did nothing ...untill i taped the starter and then it made some weird noises...then i just jumped the wires and taped the starter at the same time and it turned over...but now everytime i want to start it i have to do the same thing...

Ayuh,.....

Then you need to Pull the Starter,+ Bench Test it......

You probably otta remove, sand, clean,+ reinstall ALL of the starter,+ Battery wiring Too.....
Both the Positive(+),+ the Negative(-),.... Both Ends.......

ok, thanks...i also have to pull the outboard off and replace the seals...their leaking...but i think i have to post all of that in another topic..thanks for all the help

Actually, you probably need to take the starter to a starter repair shop and get it fixed so it will work more than just a couple of times. I doubt if you have much experience with rebuilding starters.

i also have to pull the outboard off and replace the seals...their leaking...but i think i have to post all of that in another topic

They are called outdrives, not outboards.
