I have a 1992 mariner magnum ii and was needing to know if I have to take entire lower unit off to access the dog clutch?

Much easier to do the job with it off, but... You can remove the Bearing Carrier and then the Propshaft and Clutch Dog, and Reverse Gear, can be pulled out. Unfortunately some other parts of the shift mechanism may not come out with it and will likely fall out of the shaft as it is being removed.

If it has the original 4.25" small gear case just do the above posted ...if it has been replaced with a large 4.75" gearcase the unit will need removed and shift shaft removed to release the shaft.
