Good Day All,

I am in the process of testing my motor, and wanted to know a couple of things about using the "dog ears" for testing..

1. how long can I test the motor with the dog ears on?

2. Can I put my motor in gear with the dog ears on?

Thanks in advance,

Brook

With sufficient water flow you can run her as long as you like.

Yes, you can put her in gear, but DO NOT rev beyond about 1500-2000rpm. That is still a no-load condition.

Good luck. :)

Further to this question then...

How does one then simulate a "load" condition to set the timing advance or similar fine tuning?

Thanks,
/Kris

You don't simulate a load, Kris, you provide one.

Most common way is with a tank and a test wheel or a tank big enough to tolerate WOT without shooting all the water out.

One other method, that my favorite wrenches use, is a dynamometer.

Some guys do it with the boat in the water and firmly tied down.
