Dogging my motor....

I have an 1987 85 horse Force. The over all condition of my motor is great. It runs like the wind, doesn't lose power after it warms up or anything like that. The thing I was wondering while riding around at WOT for damn near 5 hour straight yesterday is how long will my motor take this abuse? Is this abuse? I mean 30 to 45 minutes at WOT then slow down, maybe stop for a few and swim. It is not wide open for 5 hours. I would say in a 5 hour period of a running motor 4 hours of that running is at WOT. Are these motors built for this and if not would a Rude handle this type of running? I basically am looking for advice on how to treat my motor to keep from damaging it. I have owned a 9.5 rude for some time now and that little motor will take a licking and keep on ticking as long as I keep it maintained. Are the bigger motors the same? I do take care of my equipment, regular maintenance and such. I do all my own work so I know it will be done right. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
cordell

If the motor is propped right (running at correct RPMS), has lubrication (proper oil/gas mixture or working oil injection), and is running at the proper temperature(working cooling system, then you can put the hammer down and she'll run fine all day long. As for maintenance just make sure the impeller is pumping well and everything else is operating properly. Easy way is to get the manual and go through the tuneup chapter. Make it a point to decarb every few months or so.

Re: Dogging my motor....

I agree with fish. Most outboards only know two speeds: OFF and ON.

HOWEVER, I prefer to run mine at 3/4 throttle for economic reasons.

If you were to take off the carb cover, you would see that at 3/4 throttle, timing is almost fully advanced, yet the carbs are only open about 1/4 of the way. Once you bang them open all the way, the engine gets very thirsty.

On my engines, the difference between 3/4 throttle and wide open is about 3-4 MPH (around 8-10 %) yet fuel consumption increases about thirty percent. ---A very expensive difference. And noise goes up radically too!

I have found the noise factor to be LOUD in my rig too! I hit WOT then drop a tiny bit and noise goes down though speed seems to be dang near the same. I did get the correct controls hooked up but still when I advance the throttle I dont seem to be reaching throttle capacity. I will have to get some pics up to show what I am talking about. WOT with throttle stops short of pushing the carb levers all the way down. I can take my hand and push that lever a little bit further, though not much but it is enough to take notice. maybe it is just not ment to go that far and has the extra room for give, sort of keep it from breaking?

I appreciate the feedback!

thanks

A 2 stroke outboard is perfectly happy running at its reccomended wot rpm
even hour after hour; but I think it should be obvious that running at 5,500 rpm instead of 2,750 is going to put twice the wear on the motor. Also keep in mind at wot you are running at its design limit. As allready stated you'll be using nearly twice the fuel.

Re: Dogging my motor....

There are NO stops on the carb butterflies. It is easy to push them well past horizontal or fully opened. At full throttle, the ell shaped arms on the shaft will usually have one arm horizontal BUT the only sure way to check is to remove the air box an actually look at the butterflies. Relatively close to horizontal is acceprable--the engine will not even know the difference.

Unless you are anal like me! Perfectly horizontal at full throttle is the only thing good enough--The engine won't know, but I will know if they are not and it will bother me until I finally adjust them. Call me Mr. Monk. (Tony Shaloub on the show of the same name in case you never watched it.)

That is exactly what I am talking about!!! At WOT it is open BUT I am able to open a wee bit more by moving with my hands. I haven't done this while flying across the water only in the garage. I am sure it would not be noticeable though I know that it is there! lol
