I have a medium size dog that I would like to take boating with us.

Im concern about her claws and Uphlostery. How do you prevent pet claws from piercing the uphlostery.

Keep them clipped. My dog loves the boat and it's just not the same when we leave her ashore.

Agree. Keep em clipped and a little filing the sharp edges off always helps.
Don't leave the poor dog ashore. They love it out there. get them a flotation device though just like the people.

AND be certain to maintain control -- even to the point of keeping the dog tied while underway. I personally know of one dog that was so excited it jumped off the front, was hit, prop cut, and needed to be euthanized. Sad story no matter how you tell it.

I can't wait to take the dogs out on the water. I usually keep their nails trimmed short...just last week, I accidentally cut one too short  But as added protection, I'll probably line the cushions with beach towels.

Also, if your dog is a swimmer like mine (100lb lab) his/her claws get soft and wear smooth from walking on the dock and pavement. Mine is 11 this year and has been boating with us for all 11 of them. Never had a dog related tear. Godd luck and happy boating with your pooch!

I've got two 100 lb labs and an australian sheperd. The Ruff Gear PFDs with the handles on the back are the only way I can get them back in the boat. And they actually like wearing them!

Thanks for the comments. I like all the ideas from trimming the Nails to using Beach Towels or a Pad.

Happy Boating.

Took Our Pooch Boating with us last Saturday. My wife cut the Dogs Nails short as much as possible. The dog was all over the Upholstery and I could not see any Possible damage any where. This is Good.

They also make nail caps called soft paws that are surprisingly easy to put on. I use them on my cats as an alternative to declawing and I know people who put them on their dogs to save their hardwood floors. They'd be perfect for this.

I swear my dog is going to end up in the Drink. While we are moving the Dog always spots the Ducks and Birds on the Water. We have to hold her back from Jumping in.
