New gimbal. Ujoints, stub shaft, lower carrier, new prop and hub, and I still get noise when outdrive is all the way down, and all the way up. Noise is better mid trim, but is audible when turning. Any suggestions?

Yes that would help. '93 glastron ssv 175 4.3 alpha one gen2.

Looks to me like your throwing parts at the noise before figuring out what the problem really is. I hope your "all the way up" means trim and not trailer position.

How long have you had the boat and when was the last time the gear lube was changed and engine alignment checked? Also did you do the work or have it done? How long ago did the noise start?

Noise has been present since I bought the boat 4 years ago. It had water in bellows over winter so that made me change the gimbal and joints. Later the drive was pulled and oil was present in bellows so stub shaft and seal was replaced. Lower carrier was done since the water got in there as well and made a mess of the bearings.

Getting the hole story helps me understand what has happened over time. I take it the stub shaft is the Yoke which holds the first U-joint coming out of the top, correct?

Did you replace any of the bearings in the upper or lower drive?

Yes that's the shaft I meant. No top bearigs were done. The lower carrier comes with bearings I'm assuming, so yes those were done. Engine alignment has always been hood, and drive oil is good.

My thought is you have some ruff bearings, and the carrier doesn't come with bearings. My guess is you had it done by someone else and they could have just replaced seals in the carrier, or the carrier and seals. Since this noise has gone on from day one, the drive had some issues and the water in the bellows only caused the start of repairs. You can keep running it, but in my opinion, your going to need someone to go completely though it.

I will PM a couple guys here that have more experience with this drive then I

I'll check my bills to see exactly what was done. They wanted to do engine coupler if noise persisted.

Are you using the correct U joints? Installed correctly with a press and not just beaten in place? Gimbal bearing installed to its fully seated position?

Correct ujoints, I did them at work myself like a do all ujoints, not with a press tho. Shop did gimbal bearing. Noise is worse under load/ turning and trimmed all the way down or up.

The noise was present before I did the joints, so nothing changed. Old ones were Perfectly fine.

Time to check gear clearances and bearing pre-loads... Particularly the main bearing pack in the top box if the noise is more apparent 'off straight'... The bearing carriers normally come with the small torrington bearing for the propshaft in the back, but not a new reverse gear bearing. That should also be checked for clearance.

I think I would be stripping it right down to component level, checking all the bearing and gear surfaces, replacing all the seals (they're cheap at this point of the discussion) and rebuilding it using all the shimming tools and rolling torque indicators I could get my hands on.... I suspect you may have more than one 'problem'....

Chris.....

I'm feeling the same way. Maybe I'll spring for an SEI drive overthe winter. Love the boat but I'm hyper sensitive to noise lol
