As we all know these marine starters are expensive, I had mine rebuilt, for the tune of 75 bucks. Take it to a starter and alternator shop, he put all new parts in it and galvanized the inside of the case.

I am taking my 30+ year old starter to the rebuild shop today. It's about $70 bucks to rebuild it as compared to $150 for a new one. There really aren't hardly any differences between a new starter and a rebuilt one.

Dumb question...could the rebuild shop make changes that could cause the starter to no longer be "marine"?

Sure, they could leave out seals, straps, and spark screens if you want them to.

Just make sure you get a warm fuzzy from them that gives you some assurance that they're competent to do the work - flat out ask if they rebuild marine electrical components.

I just took my starter in to have it rebuilt and I had a standard selonoid on it. The technician recognized it right away and said that he would put the correct seal on it to make it compliant.

Good tips on the local rebuilders!
Having spent several years in the engineering side of alternator remanufacturing, I can tell you that there are many "100% New" starters and alternators (China built, of course) that look just like the original, but are pure junk.
Many, maybe most, of these "100% New" were much less durable than a quality reman or rebuild. Beauty of these units was only skin deep.

Any knowledgeable rebuilder will be able to immediately spot a "marine" version. They know how to rebuild them, and most of the components that make them marine parts are part of the casing itself, so no reason to rebuild that part of the starter/alternator.
