Last year I decided to take the familiy for a late season day on the water.

We bought a huge amount of fried chicken for the day on the lake and somehow forgot to throw it away at the end of the day.

Well, after our day we put the boat up in the dry dock for the season with the remainder of the chicken still on the boat.

The next spring we had a surprise Rotting chicken smells bad but raccoon pee smells worse. It seem that a family of those whiley beasts set up camp in my boat.

Ugh. I've tried nearly everything and I can still smell it.

This is no joke. I am an insurance adjuster and deal with property losses. I have had dozens of 'biological' cleanups over the years; from suicides to bodies found weeks after death.

The odors can be very unforgetable, and borderline impossible to remove.

Raw rotting flesh is honestly impossible to remove without removing all items that the biologicals soaked into. (even metal according to mythbusters)

If you dont want to gut any contaminated carpet, wood or fiberglass, you could get intouch with a local 'crime scene clean up' company. I have 3 I use between NC, VA and WV. If you cant find one in your local pages, call the police and they will get you in touch with who they use.

Other than that, you need to replace everything the liquids have touched.

Chicken seems to be bad stuff to deal with, I know of 2 people that had chickens rot in things and they had to throw them out. I know where there is an almost new fridge that was thrown out cause of the smell and thats after he tried everything he could think of to freshen it up. Even the pressure washer never helped. Everything that can absorb the odor will probably need to be replaced unless the crime scene people have some magic stuff that works.

I bought one of these chlorine dioxide generators to eliminate mouse urine odors from my car. They make them in various strengths/release rates for different problems. The Auto Vaccine worked great on my car. If it's an enclosed area, you might try one (check out the marine version) and they're cheap enough to take a chance-

Time, powerwashing, Fabreeze and natures miracle have taken most of the chicken smell out it's the raccoon pee that is bothersome.

Re: don't forget the chicken

have you tried vinegar???????

i had a buddy with an old 4wd pick-up he kept out in the pasture and it had a family of coons take-up inside his truck (he forgot to roll up the window)............... the part im coming to is apparently he had put rat poison under the seat to help control the population of un-wanted guests and the coons got into it..........this was only a play truck for muddin and tearin up.

there they lay 5 of them dead ............ and stink..... whooo you couldnt get within 20' of that truck.

heres what my bud did: he removed the carpet (to take it to the car wash), then after pressure washing he scrubbed it with a vinegar/soap/water solution, then he took it back to the car wash.

it smelled like vinegar for a while but even the vinegar smell faded...............and it was more bearable than the dead smell.

frbreeze probably would work...........if you could afford enough of it.

good luck!!

p.s. vinegar kills all germs too

Re: don't forget the chicken

I have a friend who had a coon take residence in his boat last summer. He works for a company that does insurance claims for flooding, sewer floods, and fire damage. He used a type of industrial urine cleaner and a pressure washer on his boat and to this day, not a wiff of urine remains. I would look in the phone book and try and find a company like that and give them a call. They might sell you a bottle or tell you were to get it. I was just in his boat this weekend and you would never know that it happend, it was shocking. And trust me I know, he called me over to check out the damage when he found it. We thought the boat was done, so we started drinking the tears away. Good Luck.

Pet supply stores sell many products to neutralize the smell of pet urine on carpets, etc.

It works perfectly on dog urine. I'm not sure about 'coons though.

The one that works for me is Nature's Miracle, Stain & Odour Remover. I bought it in Canada. The bottle claims: "Completely Eliminates Urine Odours With No Perfume Cover-Up..."

It's by Eight In One Pet Products from NY and has a money back guarantee.

I agree. I ahve a deep freeze that power went out to for a week or two about five years ago. The smell is still there now. I have done everything imaginable to clean it and it's still there. I can still smell it on cardboard when it comes out of there. We use the other deep freeze for anything not sealed.

I second the natures miracle stuff. Not trying to promote it, just saying that it works. My Grandmother always swore by vinegar though. Cheap and effective.

Try baking soda, It also works wonders. Sprinkle it on let it sit and vacuum it up.
