Re: dont know to much about boat motors help
If your engine has sat for 10 years, you must replace the water pump impeller. Obtain a manual before attempting this.

You will see the difference when you get a new impeller. The old one will have taken on a 'set' from having been sitting. It is good practice to replace your impeller at least once every two years anyway, regardless of use.
If you run the old one, you risk having it come apart and clog other parts of the cooling system, as well as risking an overheat.

Water is supposed to come gushing out of the large hole in the exhaust housing (leg) on the back of the engine, a little ways down from the powerhead. It will only do this once it's warmed up a bit and the thermostat opens. There is no tell-tale as such. Water goes in on the other side of the exhaust, facing the propeller. 'Muffs' do not fit your engine well, try to use a barrel filled past the seam between the lower unit and the exhaust housing.

PS - whenever starting a new topic here, be sure to include your model number, year, hp. Not everyone knows you have a '64 60hp Johnson.

I hope this helps!

PPS - I thought I referenced Joe Reeves post about the carb needle valves in your last post, and the post before that some time ago. Do you need help understanding his instructions?
