Don't know were to start

I have a 84 Evinrude 115. Last year on the lake the motor started knocking, so we shut down
the motor an brought the boat in. We tore it apart last fall and found that the roller bearing
went bad. We labled and marked everything while it was coming apart. Replaced the bearings
and put it back together the way we maked it. Now we can't get it to start. I have checked and
do get spark and gas. When I try to start it, and it trys to fire, there is a little back kick to the
motor (like it is out of time.) I have been looking over my manual and don't see a way to set the
timing like you would a car (Set to top dead center) if that's the way to do it. I guess that it
could be a number of things, but I'm guessing that it could be the stator misalined. Any ideas?

Chaplin, are you sure the plug wires are back on the correct cylinders? Are the plugs getting wet?
(with gas)Are the chokes operating correctly?
Its hard to beleave the linkage and stator parts could be that far out.If there is no mention of timing adjustments there probably isnt
any.There may be a carb/ignition syncronizing
procedure or setting.
Good luck.

Yes, I did pull the plugs and they are wet with gas. We did mark the wires to where they would
go, but I'm still trying to check that in the manual. Seem to invade me at this time. LOL

And I have gone over this book may times looking for timing adjustments...just aint there. Other than syncronizing the carbs and links. Guess that I'll start there.

Your timing is set with the woodruff key on the flywheel. If not torqued down well it will spin or shear this key. Have you rechecked it? If not I must agree that you may have plug wires swapped. Your timing is preset.

Chaplin,

I have myself made the mistake of swapping plug wires on a crossflow V-4. Same result you're getting.

Each coil has its own plug wire. The top coil on each cylinder bank is for the top plug on each bank. Same for the bottom coils and plugs.

Re: Don't know were to start

Thanks guys for the ideas!! I sleeped on the problem and decided to start from scratch. I know
that it acted like a timing problem, and that was were I started. I checked all the links and they were fine. So just for the kick of it I pulled off the flywheel. there I found the problem. The woodruff key sheared. I replaced that and she fired right off.
Again guys, Thanks!!
