tried adjusting carb on 1972 merc 402 40 hp. (i know,i know) cause ive lost wot rpm's. now it runs like crap and i cant dial it in. all i messed with is the mixture adj. screw. what is the correct tuning procedure to make sure my motor is running at its max. potential and not leaving any power on the table? thank you

Re: dont know what im doing

Those are LOW SPEED mixture screws and have absolutely nothing to do with high speed operation. They do have an impact on the transition from slow to high speed but during high speed operation fuel flows only through fixed high speed jets. You adjust those with the boat IN THE WATER not on muffs. With the engine OFF, turn the screws in until lightly seated. Then turn them out about 1-1/2 turns. Start the engine. Start with the top carb and SLOWLY (in 1/8 turn increments) turn the screw IN. If the engine runs worse back the screw out until you achieve the best idle. Repeat for the next carb. Then readjust the idle SPEED if necessary. Then repeat the IDLE MIXTURE adjustment. Run the boat. If the engine bogs a bit when hammering down from idle to full throttle (not in neutral please), richen the mixture slightly to achieve good transition.
