good thing you had the drive pulled after all. was that your choice or the mech's?

what are your choices...risk it, go ahead and pay him for it, take it home and learn yourself?

did he give you an e$timate?

yes had it pulled and told me to buy the part and give him 120 bucks and the part 70. plus the shift bellow probably another 100 bucks

Well, 70 is a little high for the gimbal bearing, but if he only wants 120 to install it, I'd say go for it. I did mine and boy, do I wish I would have paid someone. The cheapest quote I got to do bellows and gimbal bearing was in the 900 range. You have a very cheap mechanic, tip him well.

Yes definitely get it replaced now.
A buddy of mine had his gimbal bearing seize up and destroyed the shaft and u-joints and totally destroyed the bell housing.
Better to spend a few bucks now then a bunch of money later.

you don't have to remove/touch any of the bellows , unless they need replacing. just pulled mine through the bell housing and u joint bellows and installed it in reverse.

I just recently had my gimbal bearing replaced. The part was $75. I also had the carb rebuilt. My mechanic gave me a deal at only $150 for the labor. I could definitely notice the "grinding" noise had gone once I had this done.

Being the whole kit is 100 bucks and the other guy wants 70 for just the bearing it seams like a "no brainer" to me....
Very possible the bearing is making noise because water was getting in anyway.

Earlier this summer I had the seals on my outdrive replaced and when the mechanic had it apart the gimbel bearing (and I think the u-joint) where rusted bad. He replaced the seals, bearings, joint, and new cables for $650. I called two other shops in the area and they wanted about $850 and said "get in line" for service. Once I heard that I couldnt drive any faster to this guy. He did great work, and also answered some additional questions I had on the boat.

If you are paying someone to do the work, might as well do it when the dirve is torn down. How bad would it be to get on the lake for a weekend of fun and have that $100 part go out you opted not to replace? :)

Sometimes those "perfect deals" really bite you in the arse....

Boating is expensive, might as well get used to it....;)

Oh yeah, I know what you mean. This elderly gentleman I bought my boat from continued to tell me how he was up to date, if not ahead, on all maintenance. That was before I knew symptoms of bad bellows, u-joints, gimbal bearings, etc. The boat was perfect to him, about $1000 later and 25 hours of manual labor (as I did it myself, and I was a first timer) that thing better be perfect now!
