Dont use car battery on outboard?

Hi, Ken.<br /><br />Nonsense. Someone is trying to sell batteries labeled "Marine".<br /><br />Auto batteries are satisfactory starting batteries. They are not suitable for deep cycle applications.<br /><br />Good luck.

....and in real rough water they tend to bend or peen the bottom edge of the plates if the battery is mounted in the front of the boat, otherwise they work fine....maybe jus' don't last as long....

Agree with JB...with the exception of 'maintenance free' [sealed] batteries used on unregulated charging systems....is sure death for a battery....

A friend in the battery manufacturing business told me that the only difference is a deeper sediment collection chamber in the bottom of the marine starting battery. Marine use subjects the battery to a lot more vibration, which causes more sediment to fall off the plates. Over time, sediment builds up, and shorts out the plates. That's why car batteries don't last any time in a boat.<br /><br />Batteries in my truck have fizzled twice on steep launch ramps. Same thing. Sediment migrated to the rear of the batteries, and shorted them out.<br /><br />Hope this helps.
