Saw someone do this today and thought of yall for some reason? :)

Yall DO NOT I repeat DO NOT use a bench grinder on soft metals and wood. IT WILL CAUSE THE GRINDING ROCK TO EXPLODE!

One of the things that causes a grinding wheel to explode is grinding a
material that the wheel is not designed for such as aluminum or other low
melting metals. The friction melts the aluminum and travels into the wheel
cools and expands, this causes the small fractures. This is the eventual
cause of the exploding wheel. Never grind aluminum !!!!!!!
Keep a container of water to cool any tool you are sharpening. As long as
don't forse your tool against the wheel it won't heat too much. Cool it in
water once every minute or so to be sure.

Alot of people dont know this..Just thought Id pass it along.

hey TRENT,, thanks for the heads up..

i seen wheels blow-up in safety films only.. an it's a bad ,bad thing..an goes right thru safety glasses..

i never knew what caused it.. just figured old wheels, factory defects, humidity ,ect..

but never knew of soft metals..

heck, i grind aluminum all-the-time.. never knew.. an i thought the 'water' was so not to take temper out, only..

i'll say again,, thanks.. cause i'm always afraid to use them, anyway..

One other thing is to keep your face as much out of the line of the wheel as possible...if there is wheel come apart at least your face won't be in the way...just a thought :)

You can't grind much aluminum anyway...it will just cover the wheel and ruin it rather quickly.

I thought the soft material clogged the wheel, made it lose grinding ability. Anyway, a man less than a mile from me was killed when his grinding wheel exploded. He had an old hand cranked wheel that he put an electric motor on, the wheel exploded and a chunk lodged in his brain.

Gulp, I grind aluminum all the time, usually just to clean up an edge from hacksawing it. Neither tool does well with aluminum anyway. Now ya got me skeered.

Aluminum is no problem to grind but the disc's have a different composition to resist oxide buildup on the disc.
I grind Alum regularly and I aint scared of it.
Whatever discs or wheels you use make sure it has a rated MAX RPM that matches or exceeds the grinder speed.
Only 2 things will cause a disc to blow.
RPM far too high or the grinder has been dropped / jammed and the disc is damaged.
You NEVER use an old 14" Cut-off wheel in a grinder after it is worn down.
Very Dangerous Practise.
Our engineering shop uses grinder discs by the truckload each year and we have not had a disc explode in use.
Safety First..

Good luck,
Peter

Peterf.... Their is a difference between "bench grinders" and the type your talking about. Yes I use "grinder discs" all the time also. Just dont use a bench grinder. The kind with the "heavy rock" type grinder.

Hi Trent,
Yes I am aware of that also but you can also get "stones" to suit aluminum in that application.

Peter

I don't see how it's possible for any thing to migrate into the wheel while it's spinning, centrifical force whould/ should prevent that. Right? Grinding on the side of the wheel might force stuff to migrate into the wheel.

I think it's more important that you remember to stand off to the side or wear a full face motocycle helmet.
