Re: doral tri-hull

Mid-80's fiberglass boats are prone to rot like nearly anything else. Make sure you're structurally sound - good transom, good floor, no visible rotting wood, no standing water that shouldn't be there. Make sure the OB is running right too. You need to be able to run it, at least - get it on the water or to a mechanic even better.

Tri-hulls are love or hate - you love 'em, or ya' hate 'em. I happen to love 'em. They're a great platform for swimming off of, fishing off of and they're not bad as a ski boat either. The downfall is rough water. Depending on the hull, they can slam around on choppy water and be very uncomfortable. Coming through the 80's there were a few different things that I would look for - some of the 16's would be lighter hulls rated only to handle about 60HP. They would move along okay, but I always thought they felt rickety. I liked the power of the heavier boats that were rated more toward 100HP. They typically had better seating, and (obviously) more power.

Some of the tri's have three sponsons (the hulls) the same size. That's a true tri-hull. Many more had a bigger center sponson (deeper) and smaller (more shallow) outboards. Those are called modified or "cathedral" hulls. The latter are what I have always had - I think they handle the water better, and have a more comfortable ride.

Don't worry about the brand. Doral tri-hulls were nothing to write home about, but well cared for ANY boat is a good boat. Look at the condition, and make sure you feel the price fits what you're buying.

I'm in "that other group" lol but then I can see that others have different priorities.

Read this entire recent thread.... The things you need to know about buying a cheap used boat ARE in it.

Also the year and brand are the LEAST important details to post here... we need to know PRICE, condition, engine/drive and we need pictures.... not pics of the side of the boat.... we need to see pics of the interior, engine, trailer, and anything that might show us a problem.

Also, tell us what you plan to DO in the boat with how many people.

Also post the add so we can see the details on the boat and what the seller said. It helps sometimes. Trihulls will pound some in the rough stuff, the good thing though is it will get you home in the rough stuff. Many 16 foot v hulls will be on shore when your out fishing.

Sorry, not to derail. This was a nice little tri hull, a 15 foot mako, I should have never sold it! Smoke might have even liked it.

You take a lot of pics from your roof............

If I Was gonna have a tri, having one I can stand up when operating on the rough would be a HUGE bonus.

Technically my 10' jetboat is a tri and it DOES beat the poop out of me whenever the wind picks up and blows a little chop on the river.

Lol, its the only way I can get a good overall pic. was a pic for the sale. It really was a tough boat but was definately better standing up in rough water. Great little fishing boat. Think it would be easy to convert almost any trihull to this layout.

Re: doral tri-hull

a 16' "tri-hull" is a very generic used boat b/c they were very popular in the 70's. With so many cheap used ones they can make a good starter boat or utility boat, b/c you can get them so cheap, if they develop problems, toss them and get another.

Sinking much more money in them than just maintenence is generally not wise unless you have more time than money, and skills and a place to work. That's for the hull. Buying an old motor means you usually sacrifice reliability, and will be putting money in to the mechanic rather than to the seller--so you have to assess whether you can fix motors and tolerate unreliability.

Re: doral tri-hull

hey thanks everyone for the help. i have always liked tri hulls and dont know why lol. i plan on using it mostly for fishing and kneeboarding/tubing. i would like to take at least 4 people out at the same time. the boat is for sale for 500 bucks with a mercury 650 engine in which he says needs a little bit of tlc but im not worried. i have a 1973 evinrude 50 for now that i totally just rebult and runs amazing. he swears the hull and everything is in solid shape so i guess we will have to see. i was just wondering if there were anything specific to look for and how to make sure its going to be soild because its not like i can just start tearing up the floor to look at the stringer and pull back the fiberglass to look at the transom lol. i have a boat now but the transom is rotten i found out this weekend and i dont want to take the time fixing it so im just going to sell it as a project boat with trailer

Tri-Hulls are nice for kneeboarding. Mine tossed a great table for working across. At 3/4 throttle there was enough wake to do barrel rolls over ... if you were successful. Post some pics of it if you want some more opinions on the boat.

Hope it works out for you.

Just be careful not to get another project. If the boat has any pie plates or access covers, get in there and check things out. Pull a couple screws in the back and see if any water weeps out of them. Ask the owner how and where she was maintained and kept. Like any other older boat, you take the risk not knowing exactly how the boat was maintained before you got her. This boat could turn out to be in worse shape than the one you already have or could be in great shape, all depends on how it was maintained.

getting a survey done and having a qualified mechanic look the motor over is usually a good start. Good luck.

Re: doral tri-hull

outside storage is not necessarily bad. it can be. All depends on if the plug was out and the bow raised. Above-board weathering will be obvious-but it's a $500 boat!

You don't get a survey for a $500 boat. Use your knuckles.

The Merc 650 is an old and tempermental engine but you have a back up, so go for it.

Test the transom by trying to wiggle the motor. Any flex, walk. Look for big cracks (not spider cracks--they are normal). but even with some cracks, if there's no movement, you'll get your $500 of fun out of it. Just don't plan on rebuilding it.

Go for it and have fun.

Re: doral tri-hull

thanks again for the help guys. as i mentioned earlier i have a rebuilt evin 50 with all new ignition, alternator, wiring harnesses and all so im not concerned what shape the engine on this tri-hull is. if anything i would like to put the merc 650 on the stand and rebuild it as well or just sell it. if the boat is in good shape im happy as i wouldnt mind come fall this year to have it restored with seacast and such. i will go look at it tonight and let you all know how it went!!! thanks again!

Re: doral tri-hull

Don't "wiggle" the motor.... unless you weigh 400 lbs, stand on the lower unit and bounce.... the transom should not move.

Couldn't see your pics before because site was not showing the links. $500 boat at best, personally I would pass and find a nicer boat to dump your money into.

I agree with Chris ... just looked at the photos. That one looks pretty rough. $1,000 will get you a heckuva' lot more boat than that.
