I was running on the lake and the engine stoped running suddenley I tried to start it back and it would not spin over  So I dropped my trolling motor and fished for a couple hours and tried to start it again and it cranked but no power. Broke the engine down and found one badley burned piston and one gaulded piston on the same side. Also decided to check out a soft spot in the floor and did not turn out good, rotten to the stringers.:grumpy:To try to shorten this up. The boat is a 1977 TERRY AFB 15 and I like it so the boat will be restored. I am a mechanic that has very little knowledge on outboard engines. What concerns me is if i rebuild the engine what made it burn the pistons on the same side? reeds look good and carbs are good.

Re: Double wammy!

What size/make/year engine is the outboard?
My first thought of what happened is no oil was making it to the cylinders. Does it inject or mix the oil?

Re: Double wammy!

Could have been a cooling issue. Blockage on that side? Thermostat?

Not an oiling issue- no oil injection on that motor.

Re: Double wammy!

Agree not oil injected, probably cooling as Chinewalker stated and could be aggravated if the timing is off.

Maybe lean carbs or water deflectors on that side.

Re: Double wammy!

Yes.......They direct water flow to the proper place in the block for proper cooling. If they are swelled up, they should be replaced.

I looked at them they look old and hard but intact. I am woundering about the ware on the engine it ran good and started good but it was tired 85lbs compression on all cylinders. do you think this could have caused it?

off the topic but wouldn't it be much easier to buy an new old boat (dry) with a good motor and start from there instead of killing yourself with all the trouble...

Re: Double wammy!

Buy an OMC Factory Service Manual and keep on working on it. And you'll find out it's fun and you'll learn something. You can always get back on here for any questions you have.:D

I have a manual and will be rebuilding it. Working on stringers on good days and engine on bad days. Thanks.
