I agree with the speed thought, also what style of DR ball are you using? I been using the round uncoated style, under similar conditions I get the same result. My buddy uses the finned coated style, I wonder if he gets the same thing?

Always had the wire sing regardless if i use the10lb ball or smaller. I think it is just the way it moves with the water pressure going aganist it.
You may not get that if you use mono

It may be interesting to measure your boatspeed not from a gps but relative to the water and current direction of the water. There may be more forces pulling on that wire than seems obvious at first.

Sounds like you guys are right, my guess was ball design, but if the fin style does it too, then I guess the vibration is not that.

Now I am confused, since fish are sensitive to sounds and vibration, maybe we want our downriggers to sing? I mean do you guys think it is bad, if the DR wire is singing?

Fish are not sensitive to sound. It is unbelivible how much noice is in the water when you take into prop noise sonar echos etc.

Fish are sensitive to movement & smell And that is what there horizontal lines nose pick up.

I'm sure ther is going to be some controversy.

I always run my lures about 75 feet behind the down rigger and try not to run a straight line, but a zigzag.

In my boat cable hum is dependent on speed, weight and how much cable I have out. A lot of times it will hum more when fishing shallow, 40-60 feet deep. I don't get it as much when fishing deep. I use 12lbs weights and will have up to 250 feet of cable out. I don't think the hum affects the fishing, at least for salmon and trout.

Damon

Fish are very sensitive to sound (vibrations). I see it all the time when diving and fishing. I have found loud and or unusual sounds will spook most fish. Exhale thru scuba regulator spook a fish, drop something in boat spook fish. The lateral line picks up vibrations from sound and movement.

That is a good sound! It usually means that you are going the right speed. Dont worry about it!
I have caught more fish while my downrigger lines are humming than not.
