I purchased two new gaskets for the drain and fill plug on my 89 90hp johnson, and last night I pulled the fill plug to take a look at it, and there doesnt appear to be a gasket there, on the acutal plug(screw) it has rubber that appears to be part of the plug, should I still stick in the new gasket I bought?

Quite often they stick in the hole and you cant see them well with the oils covering them as they're translucent. I use a small screwdriver to pick them out, even when I cant see them as oil is draining out.

p.s. where in Ontario are you?

There are two types of plugs, ones that take washers and ones that take o-rings. Sounds like you have o-ring plugs. Replace the o-rings.

Re: drain plug gaskets?

I have an 8 HP Evinrude that has the o-ring type plugs even though the screw and washer configuration shows in the parts diagrams....of course I just bought a package of washers (10) :)
I also have an older 6 HP Evinrude which does use those washers...so I will use them up in a few years.

Does anyone know whether you can just replace the o-rings (I think iwombat is saying that you can) and then what the part number might be?

You can also just get some new washer-type plugs. Only the plugs are different; the threaded holes are the same. I like having only one type and only one part to buy.

That's an idea....and certainly the upper plug I could do that; the lower plug has a little extension that is magnetic....that seems an improvement over just a plain screw.

You can get those too. Just ask at your OMC dealer. You can also just put the washer types on the o-ring type plugs (but not the other way around). You'll need to remove the o-rings first though. The only difference is the groove under the screw head. I usually change mine out eventually though.
