Boiler valve? Not sure what kind of valve you mean, but a drain PLUG would be less likely to fail than a drain VALVE, I think.

Boiler valve will not open as far as a 3/4" drain hole? Plus it would stick out to far and be subject to corrosion from without.

the "boiler valve" i'm refering is a brass ball valve, it has a hadle that is flush to the body of the valve and the overall lenght is 21/2 inches.
I suppose the biggest risk is 1. not visably knowing its open when it should be closed as opposed to a plug is there or isnt.
2 the protrusion or extention of 2in beyound the transom could expose it to being broken off.

You've answered your own question. There would be the possibility of weeds or something catching the handle and opening it, it could get busted off, etc. I'd stick with the tried and true drain plug..

A friend of mine had the type of drain plug that had a handle that you flip up to lock it in place rather than the type that you turn the little handle. Weeds caught the handle and flipped it open and the plug fell out. Boat about sunk before he got it out. He had to keep it on plane and get the truck/trailer real quick.

Re: drain plug or boiler valve ?

Time to relate an incident from my past. I was out in a friends boat and it was packing some rain water. I offered to pull the plug for him while on plane. When I went to do that, I found the plug had been put in from the outside. I leaned over the back of the boat, pulled the plug out and promptly dropped it! I crawled under the transom well and stuck my finger in the hole. He tied off the boat at the dock, went to get his truck and trailer from the parking area. When he got to his truck, one tire was flat, and his spare was in his garage at home! He phoned his spousal unit at home and got her to bring the spare down to him (not happy woman by the time she arrived!) The tire got changed, while she stood on the dock and yapped off at me the whole time. This fiasco took close to 4 hours from start to finish, the whole time with my finger stuck in the hole in 35 degree salt water! And people wonder why I now travel in a Zodiac? I can fill it with a hose and drive it around :)

BTW, she got the old boat in the divorce....

Cheers
