So.... What do you think is the chance of getting this out without snapping off?? Anybody ever remove one from a 10+ year old engine without difficulty. Got it soaking with PB blaster now.

Re: Drain Plug

Ayuh,... Is it steel, or brass,..??

Turn squarely, 'n they usually come right out...

If it breaks, an easy-out will get the remains...

Re: Drain Plug

I'm pretty sure it's brass. Do you know if that is a 1/8" NPT in the block?

Re: Drain Plug

If it snaps use the smallest easy out 1st and if you get luck and don't horse it it will come out but have a 1/4 pipe tap ready to chase and cut the remaining brass out slowly!! a little at a time. Clean the rust off with a wire brush around the base of the fitting 1st before trying the box wrench (6 point)

Re: Drain Plug

So, that adapter should be 1/4 NPT(M) to 1/2-13 SAE(F)?

Ayuh,..... I like the 1/4" brass pipe plugs from the local hardware store....

The 1s that take a 9/16" wrench to remove....

Re: Drain Plug

Ok. First step is going to try to get that broken nipple out of the adapter. If that doesn't work I'll work on getting the adapter out of the block. Thanks.

Re: Drain Plug

I had the same issue except it was a pipe plug and all I did was drill a hole through it and used an easy out. 1st owner screwed it in too far and never removed it.

Re: Drain Plug

So I was all ready to do battle with this thing. Had my game face on. Imagined a whole day of drilling and tapping when it snapped off and then.... put a socket on it, barely pulled the wrench, and it started to move. No corrosion at all on the threads in block. Sometimes things work out ok. Hopefully the new one comes tomorrow.

Re: Drain Plug

If I use a regular brass plug, what should I use on the threads? Just regular Teflon tape?

Ayuh,.... I use Nothin'....

I boat in sweetwater, I take the brass plugs outa the block, 'n manifolds in the Fall, 'n drop 'em onto the intake manifold...
In the Spring,....
I take 'em off the intake, 'n screw 'em back into where they go,... Just snugged with a 9/16" end wrench,..

I've never had, nor seen any leakage issues, ever, at All....

I here Saltwater Boater's will coat 'em with teflon paste, when pullin' 'em in the Fall for drainin'....
They put 'em back in for winter strorage to preserve the threads in the cast iron,... Less chance of Rust....
Perfect Seal, or Form-a-Gasket, #2 also works, just Fine....

Re: Drain Plug

Soft brass will conform to the iron threads ans seal. Teflon tape will lube them making it very easy to over tighten.
