I am trying to locate all the relevent drain valves on my engine for winter lay-up. I have a Clymer Manual, but it does not provide too much detail. There seems to be a drain valve for the Cylinder and Exhaust Manifold- Is there one on each side for a total of two each? Do they look like thumbscrews or more like the drain on the oil pan?

Most are brass plugs....
The power steering cooler on the left side of the engine, looking at it from inside the boat,One block drain plug on each side of the block just above the lip of the oil pan,
One drain on the bottom of each exhaust manifold.
Pull the cooling line hoses from the front of each manifold that go to the thermostat housing.
Pull the large hose at thermo housing too.
I usually blow air thru everything then use RV antifreeze.Poor it in the hoses until it runs out the block drains.Put the plugs back in and your done.
Good idea to service the drive and change the oil too...

Howdy,

If you're planning to your own maintenance in the future, you should get yourself an OEM OMC service manual.

The Clymer and Seloc manuals are just not up to the task.

Also if you have "valves" in the block and/or manifolds, you should absolutely remove them and use a small piece of wire to ensure that all the rust flakes and other debris is flushed out of the block and manifolds. This ensures that all the water is removed.

Any pooled water in the block and/or manifold can crack it.

Cheers,

There are 4 drain plugs ,, 1 on each manifold & 1 on each side of engine block . plus the power steering cooler ,, mine is behind motor.. it has a drain plug too. so a total of 5 drain plugs. and lower the outdrive.

And in addition to the 4 on the engine, one on the ps cooler...there are 3 on the pivot housing, the part of the transom mount that the drive bolts to. There are 2 on one side and 1 on the other, you have to tilt it up to see both on the side with 2, and yes water does come out of these sometimes, not every time I removed them, but most of the time. Make sure you use a big screw or small screwdriver to clean out any big rust flakes that may be blocking the drains esp on the manifolds and engine block. Also make sure you remove the big hose at the front of the engine, at the bottom end, that lets the front water pump drain and also drains part of the front section of the block/heads/intake manifold. Finally, disconnect the hose that comes from the transom up to the thermo housing (the ps cooler is in line with this hose), point it down in the bilge and let it drain. This will probably drain the cooler too, but I always remove the cooler drain just in case. I then fill that hose with AF till its full, then reconnect. You may see some AF come out the water intakes on the drive, this means it got all through the impeller housing which is good. I reconnect the bottom end of big hose on the front of the engine, then pour some AF in till it comes out the block drains. I replace the drains (put a little grease on the threads) and fill the engine thru the top end of that hose, till AF comes out the thermo outlet. Then re-connect the top of the hose. Do the same with the manifolds, disconnect the hoses at the thermo housing, then pour some AF in till it comes out the drains, then replace the drain plug and fill it till you hear it come out the exhaust (USE NO TOX AF!!) Re connect the hoses. Some people like to just bump the starter a bit to make sure AF gets into the impeller housing. I remove the drive for the winter and check to make sure there is no water in the driveshaft bellows.

Re: Drain Plugs 1990 4.3l OMC

These are some great tips on winterizing. I have a 1990 Barret cuddy with the 4.3l omc and this is my first time winterizing. I gotta get it done by Friday because the temp here in SW Wa is supposed to dip down in the teens this weekend. Can anybody tell me the minimum I could get away with doing to avoid damage? I hope to finish all the winter tasks a.s.a.p. but am limited on time because of work. Thanks

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,....

2 things come to mind,...

1),.. Drain ALL the Water out of Everything in your boat.....

2),.. Don't Hy-jack old threads like this 1, but start a thread of your Own...
Otherwise,... This just gets lost in the archives....

Good luck finding one.
I have mine handy so I can answer the more esoteric questions.
