This is my first Spring with my boat. I had it winterized at a marina last Fall. As part of the winterization, the marina left out the drain plugs for the exhaust manifold and engine block.

I am trying to put the plugs in for the summer - but they don't feel like they go in all the way. So, I'm assuming that they are pipe fitting type threads - designed to not go in all the way.....

I just wanted to run that by the smart folks on this board as a sanity check. Can anyone confirm that these plugs go in a bit - but stick out with threads showing. The look reminds me of the way bolts stick out of Frankenstein's neck..

Sound right to you guys?

Thanks for any info!

Leaving those plugs out is a very bad idea. The threads in the cast iron block get rusty and then the plugs don't go in far enough. To answer your question, yes a pipe plug will stick out some. They should go in about 1/2 the threads on the plug. They DO NOT get tightened down to the breaking point.

I don't know enough about engines to argue with you - but I will offer that I had it winterized at a volvo authorized service center and they are the ones who left 'em out. Additionally, the volvo service manual says to leave them out for the winter.

Either way, thanks for the info on the plugs!
