I'm thinking of building a hydroplane for my kid with a 20 hp outboard. Any good idea of where to start?

Swede do you really want planes for a hydro or do you want plans for a utility most standard lower units don't work well on a hydro and as you can see most boat plans you buy are 20 years obsolite. We have built some D Stock utilitys in the past, even won two National Championships in D Stock If you are interested in a utility I can ck on some plans, Our boats are a progression of one another but I think I could come up with some decent plans---bob

As I said it's for my kid. I could do with a type scooter too. I'm not sure what a utility is though. I would have guessed it's either gas or electricity. Please explain to a stupid swede.

The utility boats are not specificily designed for only speed. Most can carry two people (maybe more) they normally can run on rougher water. I would think that this would be more useful you can ride along from time too time or your sons girl friend (sorry could not resist). Things like hydroplanes are ment for smoother water, go fast all the way. Grant you the Hydros are fast but normally by several miles per hour. I know you are talking about only 25 Horse power but you might read Winger Eds story about his trip out into rough water in his submarine, I mean Hydroplane. I have a 8 ft monoplane called a minimost. I wished many times it was just a bit bigger to take a friend out in when I was 16 yo. They (small boats) are a lot of fun !

Sorry I confused some of you yachtsmen, a utility is basicly a flat bottom boat of any size. I guess if you don't know that, you are surely not capably of building one Sorry I wasted my time---bob

Vox
The minimost is gonna be a handful with a 25 hp on it. Mine runs 35 MPH with a stock 9.8, Its up to speed in about 30 feet.

I built an 8'6" hydro called a scat cat when I was 16. It had an 18 hp hurricane engine on it and would do about 60mph. but most definatly a smooooth water boat. wasn't worth a crap if there was even a little chop on the lake.......

Hi Glastron Swede,
I would definitely go with a small utility runabout. Hydros are fun, but not very "utilitarian". I own several of each, and if I just want to go in circles on a calm day with no traffic, I take a hydro. If I actually want to go some place, I take a utility runabout. Our 1959 Sid-Craft D-utlity is currently being rebuilt, and is being documented at the Sid-Craft website (www.sid-craft.com). I've put hundreds, likely even thousands, of miles on that old boat, including 30-40 at a stretch. I'd never do that with a hydroplane.
You might also want to try Darrel Sorensen's frame kits for various vintage runabouts and utilities. His Jinx hull will easily handle your 25 and will give a good ride. http://www.boatracingr11.com/sorensenmain.htm
Have fun with whatever you end up deciding on and remember to attach your kill switch before pulling the cord!
- Scott
