Howdy, I scored these couple of nice pieces of driftwood off the beach of my fathers home, privately owned little stretch on choctawhatchee bay, it had stormed (and I mean STORMED) for 4 or 5 days and these washed up... Looked like cypress to me, and looked pretty cool id say....... Sooooo I put em on CL :D and got a reaponse after 4 hours... The people came, saw, and then purchased these fine pieces of driftwood I had found.... For, get this, $150..... Like finding 20 dollar bills floatin/on the beach..... :) so needless to say Im pretty stoked, and will continue to look for pieces like these, as they seem to fetch a pretty penny... What do you guys think?

At Lake Raystown the driftwood is technically Army Corp of Engineers property and I have heard Rangers tell visitors it is illegal to take it because you are stealing Corp property (okay to burn it, but not take it from the lake). I have never seen a Ranger enforce that, however.

Re: Driftwood...

Since it is on private property, you would only need the permission from the owner of the property. There is no private property on Raystown. That is the difference.

So, go snag some cash, er, I mean wood!

Re: Driftwood...

Illegal to collect driftwood in Wis.

Part of the lake, owned by the state.
If it is on shore, it is within the limits of the high water mark, which defines the state owned property.

$150?.....hope it wasn't in wooden nickels! I collect interesting looking pieces of driftwood but IMO that stuff ain't worth a real nickel.

Re: Driftwood...

I know where I can get 10 foot logs of driftwood. I'd imagine you could make some pretty awesome benches or something large along those lines with them. So my question is .....

Is driftwood structurally strong enough for this? or is it too brittle/dry?

Not that I'm going to go haul in that 10 foot log, but if I was in to woodworking you bet I would (wood).
